From Despair to Hope: Stories of Children Whose Lives Changed Through Free Education

In the heart of Sierra Leone, where poverty and despair has cast long shadows over communities for generations, education is often considered a luxury, especially for children born into vulnerable families. Many of them grow up without the hope of ever entering a classroom, let alone dreaming of a brighter future.
But that narrative is changing “one child at a time”
Take the story of Mariatu, a soft-spoken 10-year-old girl from a rural village in Bo District. Her parents, both subsistence farmers, struggled daily to provide even a single meal. School fees were a far-off dream. Mariatu spent most of her early childhood fetching water and helping her mother sell fruits by the roadside. Her biggest wish? “To wear a uniform and hold a book.”
Everything changed when Salt of Hope stepped in.
Through the Aladurah Primary School, a free education initiative run by the foundation, Mariatu received not just tuition-free education, but also school supplies, uniforms, and emotional support. Today, she is in Class 5, reading fluently, and dreaming of becoming a nurse to help children in her community.
Mariatu’s story is just one among hundreds of other children who are the beneficiary of Salt of Hope Foundation. Take a look at the video footage below!
Each child that Salt of Hope reaches represents a seed of potential being watered with love, knowledge, and opportunity. And while the foundation currently focuses its efforts on Sierra Leone, the mission is bigger, to expand across Africa and even into Australia our Headquarters, empowering marginalized communities through education, care, and hope.
We believe that when you educate a child, you invest in a future beyond measure.
